using the Wise card when traveling — how it works,
The Wise card is a multi‑currency debit card tied to a Wise account. You can hold balances in many currencies, convert between them, and spend in local currency when abroad. You can also withdraw cash from ATMs. Wise aims to offer low, transparent fees and good exchange rates.
How it Works Abroad
You can use the card in 150+ countries wherever Visa or Mastercard / Wise’s network is accepted.
For payments:
If you have a balance in the local currency (or you have converted to it ahead of time), the spending is free of conversion fees.
If you don’t have the right currency, Wise will automatically convert from another balance in your account using the mid‑market rate + a small conversion fee.
For ATM withdrawals: there are usually some free withdrawals allowed each month up to a certain limit. Above that, there are fees.
What the Fees Look Like
Fees vary depending on which country your Wise card is issued in, your currency, and how much you withdraw or spend. Some common patterns:
Fee Type What to Expect
Spending in a currency you hold Usually no conversion fee if you pay in that currency.
Spending in a currency you don’t hold Small conversion fee (often under 1%) + use of mid‑market rate.
ATM withdrawals Usually you get a certain amount free per month (or a certain number of free withdrawals). After that, a fee (often % of withdrawal or fixed + %). Also some fixed fee per withdrawal if you exceed the free number.
Ordering card, replacement There may be a one‑time fee to order the physical card; replacements or virtual card may have small fees.
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) When you pay (or withdraw) you may be offered to let the terminal convert into your “home” currency rather than local — usually this is a bad deal. Wise recommends always choosing the local currency so Wise handles conversion at a better rate.
Pros & Advantages
Better exchange rates because Wise uses the mid‑market rate (the “fair” rate) rather than big markups.
Transparency: fees are shown in advance; you can see what you’ll be charged.
Multiple currencies in one account: you can top up or hold balances in dozens of currencies. Saves you from converting ahead or carrying cash.
Convenience: works like a regular debit card for contactless payments, ATMs, etc. Digital card options. Freeze/unfreeze via app. Notifications.
No foreign transaction fees in many cases (outside of the currency conversion fee), especially compared to many traditional banks.
Limitations & Things to Be Careful OfAvailability: Wise cards are not available in every country. If you live in a country where Wise doesn’t issue cards, you might not be able to get one, or might not be able to replace it.
ATM provider / local fees: Even if Wise doesn’t charge (or charges little), the ATM owner might add a local fee. Always check the ATM.
Free withdrawal / no‑fee limit: The “free withdrawals” are limited (number or total amount). Once you exceed that, fees apply.
Conversion fees, though small, still exist when spending in a currency you don’t hold. So sometimes pre‑converting in the app when rates are favorable can help.
DCC traps: As above, always check whether you’re being forced or offered to pay in your home currency — paying in local currency is almost always cheaper.
Emergencies or places with poor card infrastructure: Carry some cash as backup, especially in more rural areas or where card systems might be less reliable.
What to Do Before and During Travel: Tips
Check if Wise issues cards in your home country, and whether you already qualify.
Load up balances in likely currencies you’ll use in travel (for major stops) if you want more control over rates.
Notify Wise via app if there’s a “travel mode” or ensure your card isn't blocked for foreign usage. (Wise generally allows foreign usage, but good to double check settings.)
Avoid using DCC — always choose local currency at point of sale or ATM.
Use ATMs less frequently but withdrawing larger sums reduces fixed per‑withdrawal fees.
Keep track of your spending via the app to avoid surprises.
Carry at least one backup payment method in case the Wise card is rejected or gets blocked.
